Court’s Orders: A Life Spent in Love… {Shandra & Jamal}

How would you define the word “wedding”? Would you say a big celebration with family and friends where a couple exchanges marriage vows? Would you say a special occasion where a bride wears a gorgeous white gown and has bridesmaids and groomsmen galore? I looked up the word “wedding” and Webster’s dictionary read “a ceremony in which two people are united in marriage“. Sounds simple right? Today I’m featuring the wedding of a couple that decided to just do that – keep it simple! I’m sure you’ll love their story.

How They Met: Ok… Jamal and I met through a mutual friend twice! Lol The first time we met I was a little skeptical because of my own reasons (playing hard to get I guess) but I figured if it’s meant to be, he will have his opportunity again..and he did!  :) The next time we encountered, we were at a club.  At the time, neither one of us was looking to get into a serious relationship with anyone but we ended up falling for each other pretty hard. And the rest is history!

How He Proposed: It was my 23rd birthday. I’d planned a big birthday dinner with all of my family and friends. A few of his closest friends were there too. We were all just laughing and having a great time when Jamal wanted to have a heart to heart in the middle of the festivities. LOL! I didn’t think anything of it. He asked me if “I wanted to be with him for the rest of my life?” I replied “ummmm yea” (I’m such a goof. LOL) Then I turned away because someone called my name. When I turned back around all I saw was this BEAUTIFUL diamond ring literally hurting my eyes! LOL! My heart started to beat extremely fast and my hands were getting tremors. :) No one was even paying attention; we were in our own little moment together. It’s like I couldn’t even hear anything when I said YES!!! We began hugging and kissing, then everyone started to say “Wait, what happened???” LOL! We told them and it was pure chaos! LOL! Someone even asked for a do over! haha! It was the perfect proposal. Everyone was present but at that moment it was just he and I.

On Wedding Planning (Pt. 1): We were definitely planning the big traditional wedding in the beginning. I had picked out my dress, picked a venue, etc. We were on our way. But everything was just going all wrong. So then we decided to do a destination wedding but that didn’t work out either.  At this point I was getting frustrated and it really didn’t matter to me anymore. I just knew I loved him and was ready to spend the rest of my life with him.

On Wedding Planning (Pt. 2): One day in late January, out of the blue he says “Let’s just get married!” I’m thinking to myself “I am NOT about to wait any longer with any planning, so he must be talking about at the courthouse.”  He agreed, so I picked the date February 10, 2012! I told myself no matter how I get married I have to have a great photographer! We kept it a secret the ENTIRE time because we didn’t want anyone talking us out of it at all.

^I personally love this photo of Shandra. It looks like she’s soaking it all in. Great capture!

When She Knew: I knew that he was the one for me when I had gone through the roughest times in the little time that we had known each other and he was there encouraging me and lifting me through everything. He wasn’t just there like a lump on the log. He has been a great inspiration and motivator to me. I really appreciate and thank God every day that He has placed a strong individual in my life that I can definitely grow old with.

When He Knew: Jamal says he knew I was the one when I accepted his son as well as him. He appreciated me for that! I opened my heart to him as if he was my own. I love him very much and am so happy to be a part of his life! ;)

1st Impressions:  HIS – (his exact words) “Yea that’s me right there!” Ummmm ok! Lol! Meaning that’s the kind of woman I can definitely see myself with. (had to break it down) Lol HERS – “He is so SEXY!!!” Of course I wouldn’t dare tell him that that early on, but that is what was going through my mind. LOL!

^ Another one of my faves!

Advice to Brides and Grooms:  Always follow your heart! Don’t listen to what anyone has to say about how big or small your wedding should or should not be. It’s up to you and your groom! In the end, you will be SO happy you that did just that! Our wedding day was a great day and I would NOT change it for anything in this world. It was perfect. It was simple. And it was very intimate. Just us! ♥

In case readers can’t tell, I have a soft spot in my heart for simple, yet sophisticated weddings. I adore them and I just love how Lexie Merlino Photography captured each and every special moment. Of course, a big thank you to Shandra & Jamal for sharing your story and images. The way you described the proposal and how you two met put a huge smile on my face. Congratulations on your recent nuptials and we wish you much continued joy, happiness and love!
