Marriage Matters: Meet Laquilla & Mark {Husband & Wife for Life!}

I could not be more thrilled about today’s featured couple. If you’re one of our Twitter followers or Facebook fans, you have probably seen me retweeting and reposting motivational one-liners that truly speak to the beauty and testament of marriage. The messages come from a husband&wife team who have started the Husband & Wife for Life movement. Their mission is “to encourage, inspire, and guide couples to overcome obstacles, and to create and sustain long-lasting relationships”. I know this post is a little text-heavy but please take a moment to read about the man and woman behind the message. I promise you, you’ll be moved!

Give us a little background on you two. – We served in the United States Army and we have been married for 11 years. We met when we were 19 yrs. old and now, we have 1 child, and live in the countryside of Fort Worth, Texas.  We share a great passion for helping others, for music and for creative arts.  Our common goal, from our wedding day, has been to stand behind each other, in everything that we do.  After having our child, our moments alone at night, is what we look forward too, daily.

And where did it all begin? Mark and I met on a Sunday morning, at church service.  Mark’s cousin was a member of the church and invited him that morning, because she wanted us both to meet.  She was positive that we would make a great match. And, she was right! We exchanged numbers and by two weeks later, we were inseparable.  6 months later, we were engaged.

I immediately fell in love with Husband & Wife for Life after I stumbled across your Twitter page. What exactly is H&WFL and what made you start it? Husband and Wife for Life is a movement for couples to fulfill their commitment to their Spouse.  Our goal is to create an awareness of the importance of keeping a strong healthy relationship and to inspire couples to vow marriage as a lifelong commitment.  Our mission is for seriously dating, engaged, and married couples. We believe that, even before your married, you need to have the right foundation to create a lifelong committed marriage. Our passion and purpose lies within helping others and helping marriages. After much prayer, God gave us a vision.  The vision came alive when we created a group on Facebook, then a page on Facebook, followed by an account on Twitter.  Husband and Wife for Life has given us the opportunity to help others in ways we never imagined we could.

I can easily see why it grew so fast. You have such great quotes and words of inspiration. Where do they come from? We read our Bible and study regularly. Also, our life’s struggles speak to us and we have great friends that inspire us.  We really put our heart and soul into giving the readers simple digestible words that they can use in their daily life.  Our life and marriage is not perfect, and it will never be.  But, even through our downs, we try to pull out what we have learned and give it to the readers.  If it helped us, we are praying that it can help someone else too.  Each one of the readers, have been such a blessing to us. And, all of the encouraging words they leave for us has help us tremendously in our marriage.  We really truly, sincerely thank them for their support.

I know some people want to hear about your wedding day and how Mark proposed. Would you mind sharing? We talked about marriage often. We even shopped and bought our rings together, before the proposal.  Because Mark is a very traditional guy, he wouldn’t propose to me until he asked my father if he could marry me. After he did, the same night, he proposed to me in the presence of my parents.  And, even though my parents were in the room, all I could remember was seeing him.  I was so happy, I couldn’t stop smiling and giggling.

…and your wedding day? Laquilla: I would describe our wedding day as peaceful. We hired a friend to take care of all the details. We both agreed that we wanted this day stress free and we wanted to be able to concentrate on each other and the moment. We knew we were supposed to be together, and with the help of our planner, we were able to concentrate on us. Everything was perfect and I remember how at peace I was.  Mark: She was peaceful and I was nervous! HaHa. I’m very traditional, so I knew this was my first and last marriage. I wanted to be sure I could be the best husband for her.

What would you consider to be the greatest benefit of marriage? Marriage is full of so many variables, and it gives you the opportunity to experience life so many different ways. One of the greatest benefits of marriage is knowing that whatever you go through in life, you will always have someone by your side to go through it with you and be there for you. There is nothing greater than to know that you are deeply loved.

I completely agree. What about the greatest challenge of marriage?  We truly believe that marriage is the ultimate challenge and, it is full of life’s little challenges. But, one of the greatest challenges within marriage is communication.  Just like a wheel, God is the axle that holds up your marriage and keeps it secure. Communication is the oil that keeps the marriage going.  A marriage without communication is like an axle without oil.  It is extremely important to talk with each other. And, this includes praying with and for each other.

Looking ahead…where would you like to see your marriage and campaign in say… 5 years? Our family has been through tough times in 2011.  Almost a year ago our family suffered a tragic loss.  Our 2nd baby girl was called to heaven, and into God’s arms, the day she was born.  We were just 2 weeks from our due date. Through our touch times, our bond with each other has become stronger than its ever been. In 5 years, we expect to be celebrating 16 years of marriage and see our bond continue to strengthen. Also,  in five years, we expect our mission to reach millions, by hosting seminars and conferences, growing our charity program, serving our readers more by providing tools that will help their marriage, and developing our official website!

Wow! What a testimony you have! I can’t thank you both enough for sharing your story, your love, and your life with us. I believe that everything you’ve wished for will come to fruition. We will continue to follow you on your Facebook and Twitter and spread the word about the awesome work that is being done by Husband & Wife for Life. Thank you again!
